Buffalo news photographer Don Nieman is a perfect example of the local talent we have here in Western New York. Don—talented, humble, hard-working, and kind—is a classic Buffalonian who loves his hometown. What a gem we have and a fantastic opportunity to capture a piece of our city.
I’ve always enjoyed the Smiles section of the Buffalo News, but had never paid close attention to the quality of the pictures and who takes them. Once it was on my radar, I quickly picked up on the consistent high quality of the photos, and most importantly, the interesting content. Don is behind many of the Smiles pictures and is a true talent in the photography world of Buffalo, NY, or anywhere for that matter.
All photos in The Smiles section of the Buffalo News Gusto are unedited with no post-processing. Don chooses from approximately 100-200 exposures before submitting the pictures for Smiles.
Don also has an account at Fineart.com which showcases some of his personal work. You can purchase them here https://fineartamerica.com/profiles/don-nieman.html?tab=artworkgalleries&artworkgalleryid=5548 . If you do not see one of Don’s photos you are interested in on fine art, you can choose more from his pbase site http://www.pbase.com/dhnieman/around_the_city
Here a few of my favs…
Buffalo From Chesnut Ridge
Chesnut Ridge was one of my grandmother’s favorite places. I would love to have it printed for my family.
Labbatt Hockey tournament
Not only are my family members huge Labatt fans, but we also love hockey. I can see this printed in many a man cave or college dorm—possibly above my brother’s fireplace mantle.
This photo is currently in the lobby of the Marriott Canal Side. Great capture of downtown, the reflections adding a beautiful touch.
Buffalo News Gusto: Great work on the Smiles section. Keep it coming, we love it. Don: Your photos seem to capture the essence of our city and its people. Priceless.
