Hurd Orchards is a family-owned farm located in the fruit region of Western NY. As quoted from the farm’s website:
“At Hurd Orchards we cherish and express the things that shape our beautiful fruit growing world- history, horticulture, culture, and folklore the beauty of flowers and gardens and landscape, the wholesomeness of fresh produce and handmade foods.”
We attended the Orchards in Bloom Luncheon held on May 15th. The food was farm to table and delicious, the barn was rustic and charming. The hosts, owner Susan Hurd Machamer and her daughter Amy Machamer, could not have been more charming as well as informative. It’s so lovely to hear about a family-owned business flourishing in our area. I never realized how lucky we are to have lilacs and all of its varieties thriving so well in the Western New York climate. After lunch there was a lesson on caring for lilacs which was very helpful. The best tip: You’ve gotta smash the bottom of the stem, or shave it if you have the correct tool. This will keep the blooms lasting longer.
The luncheons are offered from May through October with a focus on the current harvest. The handmade food, china, and linens are classically pretty. When you take fresh and gorgeous floral arrangements and add in some lanterns and orchard views, you truly have a special day.
The farm store is teeming with goodies like fruits and harvest boxes, homemade bread and muffins, dried flowers, fresh flowers, jams, and preserves. You can also find the harvest boxes, apples, jams and many other great gifts available for purchase on their website. We purchased the Chive blossom vinegar. It was served at our luncheon, came with an easy recipe, and tastes delish. We definitely have plans to buy more.
